Shop owner injured in Pietermaritzburg Panga attack

A Pietermaritzburg shop owner is in a serious but stable condition in the Netcare St Anne’s Hospital after he was attacked by robbers wielding a panga in the early hours of this morning. The attack saw the man being struck on the wrist with the implement.

It is thought that the man had opened up his shop shortly after 5am this morning when three men entered, one of whom was carrying a panga. The men assaulted the thirty seven-year-old shop owner and forced him to the floor. As he tried to steady himself he placed his hand on the edge of a pool table. The man brandishing the panga struck him on the wrist.

He was treated and stabilised at the scene by Netcare911 Advanced Life Support Paramedic Jack Haskins and his team before he was rushed by ambulance to hospital. His assailants fled the Victory Road shop with valuables and R5000 in cash. They are being sought by police.
