Helicopter evacuation after side-impact accident

Side impact

A side impact accident at the intersection of Heidelberg and Elsburg roads in Brakpan left four people injured one critically so. The cause of the accident is unknown at this stage and will be a matter for police investigation. It is believed that the bakkie collided into the side of the car and pushed it some 30 meters down the roadway. Both vehicles came to rest on the centre median after flattening a traffic light.

Netcare 911 paramedics and the emergency services arrived on scene to find the driver of the car still trapped in the mangled remains of his vehicle and in a critical condition. The 3 occupants from the bakkie were found at the roadside with serious injuries.

The critically injured man was deftly extricated from the twisted metal and immobilised on a trauma board. After paramedics placed him on a manual ventilator, he was loaded into the Netcare 1 medical helicopter and airlifted to the Netcare Union hospital for further treatment.

Paramedics worked fervently to stabilise the three seriously injured patients before transporting them by Ambulance to an area hospital for further medical care.
