Twin girls(6) survive smash that claimed four lives

Accident M4

Six-year-old twin girls survived an accident in which their mother was killed, along with three others including a woman and her three-year-old son and six-year-old daughter. The woman’s husband was also critically injured in the two vehicle smash on the M4 Leo Boyd Highway near Ballito this afternoon.

While what transpired remains vague, it is thought that a Toyota Tazz and a Renault Clio had been travelling towards Umhlanga with the former in front. A South African Police Service investigation will determine what caused the two vehicles to collide.

Following the collision the Toyota Tazz came to rest in the middle of the road while the Renault Clio left the road and came to rest in a bushed furrow at the roadside.

Six-year-old twin girls of the Renault sustained serious injuries while their mother died as a result of the crash. They were treated and stabilised at the roadside by Netcare911 Advanced Life Support Paramedics before they were transported to the Netcare Umhlanga Hospital for further treatment.

Of the Toyota the driver was the sole survivor with his wife and two children succumbing to their injuries at the scene. The man is fighting for his life and was stabilised by medics before he was airlifted by the Netcare3 Aeromedical Helicopter to the Netcare Umhlanga Hospital for definitive medical care.

The road has been closed while the scene is cleared.
