Man injured in waterfall plunge

Waterfall accident

Waterfall accident

A camera man is in a serious but stable condition in a Pietermaritzburg hospital after he fell nearly ten metres from a waterfall on a farm in Giants Castle near Loteni in the Drakensburg this afternoon.

It is thought that the man had been filming near the waterfall when he lost his footing, causing him to plunge nearly ten metres. He landed on rocks at the foot of the falls and was pulled from shallow water by other crew members.

Netcare911 Paramedics and Police Search and Rescue Officers treated and stabilised the man at the falls before he was pulled to a clearing using an elaborate rope rescue system.

The Netcare3 Aeromedical helicopter with its trauma team landed at the scene and airlifted the man to a hospital in the provincial capital for definitive medical care.

He remains in a serious but stable condition.
