A mineworker has died at Anglo Gold Ashanti’s Moab Khotsong Mine near Klerksdorp on Johannesburg’s West Rand after an underground collision.

Officials said on Tuesday Handrie Khosa was killed when two trains collided during shunting operations underground in the early hours of Monday morning.

It is still unclear what caused the accident, but the mine is conducting an internal investigation.

Anglo Gold Ashanti’s Joanne Jones said the company has extended its condolences to Khosa’s family.

“The exact cause of the accident is unclear at this stage. We are conducting a full investigation. In the interest of safety, the mine was closed immediately after the accident,” Jones said.
