Rescue efforts are still underway to find one missing miner following yesterday’s seismic event at Bambanani mine in Welkom in the Free State where eight employees were trapped. An update report by a senior inspector dispatched by the Department of Mineral Resources indicates that five miners sustained minor injuries, while one of them sustained serious injuries.

The body of a deceased employee has been recovered as well. The department is continuing with investigations into the accident.

Emergency services have been working through the night to free the trapped miners. The both were 2 300m below surface. Mining activity is however continuing.

Yesterday Harmony spokesperson James Duncan.said: “There was a seismic event measuring 2.1 at Harmony’s Bambanani Mine near Welkom. It occurred on level 75 that is about 2 300m below surface. Rescue workers are currently searching for two employees. Four others were injured and their conditions are currently being assessed.”

Last week, a man died in an accident at AngloGold Ashanti’s Kopanang mine in the North West. The mine’s spokesperson Joanne Jones said Jonase Mosebo sustained injuries during a rock fall. Mosebo was taken to hospital, but died shortly after arrival.
