The South African Chamber of Mines on Wednesday joined the world in expressing relief and delight at progress made in rescuing 33 Chilean miners trapped underground for over two months.

So far eight of the 33 miners have been brought to the surface safely. The rest of the men are waiting anxiously some 700 metres below for their 69 day ordeal to end.

“We have been watching it unfold today and over the period it has been taking place basically trying to see what can be done and we are delighted that Murray & Roberts, which is a member of the Chamber of Mines, was part of the rescue operation,” said the chamber’s Jabu Maphalala.

The chamber also praised Murray & Roberts for the part they played in the rescue operation. The South African team was among those who helped drill holes down to the miners.
