Tourist, trainee lifeguard drown at Mossel Bay beach

A Polish tourist and a trainee lifeguard drowned on Tuesday afternoon while swimming off beaches in Mossel Bay, the National Sea Rescue Institute said.

“(At 13:00) a 60-year-old male Polish citizen was found on Diaz beach after reportedly being rescued by two fellow Polish citizens after getting into difficulty in the surf,” spokesperson Craig Lambinon said in a statement.

The men were part of a Polish tour group.

Lambinon said paramedics attempted cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on the man, who was later declared dead on the scene. The Polish consulate was helping the man’s wife with the necessary arrangements.

At 13:30 the NSRI was called to Santos Beach after a trainee lifeguard was reported “missing in the surf while swimming”.

The 20-year-old man reportedly wanted to become a lifeguard but had recently failed a swimming test despite passing others tests and was not yet a fully-fledged lifeguard.

“According to reports the missing (trainee) lifeguard had been swimming when he disappeared under the water from unknown causes.”

His body was located and recovered by police divers.

Police were investigating both incidents.
