Rainy weather causes traffic havoc

Johannesburg’s emergency services pleaded with motorists to reduce speed in the rainy weather, after five people were injured in a head-on crash near Orange Farm, south of the city on Tuesday.

“At the this time of the year the roads are slippery because of this persistent rain and people should just reduce their speed. For instance, if it’s [the speed limit] 60, you should travel at 40 because stopping is difficult,” spokesman Percy Morokane said.

The accident happened after a Golf carrying four women appeared to only yield at a stop sign before heading into the carriageway near Stratford Clinic. The car crashed into a Toyota Venture. The driver and another woman had to be removed from the Golf with the jaws of life.

The driver of the Venture was also in a serious condition. The injured were taken to Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital with multiple fractures, including head injuries one of the women sustained.
