City of Cape Town increases trained lifeguards on duty as 6 drown

The City of Cape Town on Monday reported that it has increased the number of trained lifeguards on various beaches.

A total of 250 accredited lifeguards will be on duty alongside members of private clubs, the National Search and Rescue Institute and a medic helicopter.

Six confirmed drowning incidents and four near drowning incidents have been recorded at beaches across the Cape metropole since the start of the holidays.

Disaster Risk Management spokesperson Wilfred Solomons Johannes said teams remain on high alert.

“The city is appealing to people going to the beaches and swimming pools to ensure they adhere to the lifeguard instructions to only swim in the designated areas where there are flags,” he added.
