Man drowns at Battery Beach

A man drowned at Durban’s Battery Beach this morning. Two others are lucky to be alive after they too were plucked from the water by watchful lifeguards.

The circumstances leading up to and surrounding the incident remain unclear and will form the subject of a South African Police Force investigation.

It is alleged that three men had been swimming in a bathing area when they got into distress. The three were pulled out to past the backline by a strong under current.

Lifeguards on duty at the beach rushed to their aid, and managed to rescue all three from the surf. One man was not breathing and had no pulse and his rescuers immediately initiated CPR.

Netcare911 Paramedics arrived at the scene to find the sodden men near the water. Paramedics continued with the resuscitation attempt but unfortunately their efforts were in vain. The man was declared dead the scene.

The two other men were uninjured and were not transported to hospital.
