15 Killed by Lightning over New Years Weekend

15 people across the country have been killed by lightning over the New Years weekend.

Seven people were killed after being struck in Eshowe in northern Kwa-Zulu Natal on Sunday night.

A team of disaster experts had been dispatched to provide emergency relief support to the injured and to assist in putting down the fire that had engulfed some houses.

Meanwhile Eastern Cape authorities said at least eight people were killed by lightning in a number of separate incidents on New Years Day.

170 families have also been displaced after rain storms destroyed their homes.

“Currently we are visiting the bereaved families, together with the executive mayor from OR Tambo, trying to console the families. The social workers are busy counseling. Other disaster management officials are busy collecting the data for the damaged houses,” said Phendule Mbewu of the OR Tambo municipality.
