Mother and Grandmother Die in Accident

Two vehicles collided at the corners of Denne Road and Springs Road in Brakpan this morning leaving two women dead, a 3 year old injured and 2 other men with moderate injuries.

The family of 5, brother and sister, the woman’s 3 year old baby and the grandmother and grandfather were travelling in a bakkie when the accident occurred. The exact details surrounding the cause of the accident will be investigated by the police who attended the scene, but it is believed that the red hatchback came down Springs Road from Heidelburg’s direction and collided into the left side of the bakkie. The two older family members were sitting in the front cabin with the brother, sister and her baby sitting in the back loading compartment.

It seems that that the woman on the back of the bakkie was holding her 3 year old son when the impact occurred, and she was then flung from the back, landing a few meters from the smashed vehicle. She suffered extensive injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The little boy was in a critical condition and was treated by the Advanced Life Support paramedic on scene. The child’s grandmother in the front passenger seat was severely entrapped in the wreck as most of the impact was on her side. She had multiple broken bones and was stabilised inside the vehicle while the Fire and Rescue workers cut her out using the Jaws of Life. The ER24 Discovery Medicopter was called to the scene to airlift the woman to the Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital in Johannesburg where upon arrival, her condition suddenly deteriorated and she died shortly after being taken in.

The man driving and his son suffered moderate to serious injuries and were taken to Far East Rand Hospital for further assessment and treatment. They were both however in a stable condition.

The injuries sustained by the driver of the red hatchback are at this stage unclear, but it is believed that he suffered only minor injuries and was taken to hospital for a checkup.

The police were at the scene.
