Taxi rolls in Benoni

[Benoni 25 October 2011 08:00]

Shortly before 8 am this morning a fully laden taxi rolled off New Modder Road in Benoni. Paramedics at the scene explained that the accident happened approximately 1 kilometer from the intersection with Snake Road.

The taxi had rolled due to suspected mechanical failure and had landed on its wheels in the field next to the side of the road. 14 people had been in the taxi at the time, including 7 school learners between the ages of 15 and 18, wearing their school uniforms, as well as a baby girl who was with her guardian at the time. Paramedics quickly assessed all of the injured and fortunately only 2 people needed more extensive treatment for deep cuts. The 10 others were taken to Tambo Memorial Hospital, Life Glynnwood Hospital or the Far East Rand Hospital for treatment of minor to moderate injuries. 2 people had not sustained any physical injuries and they left the scene of the accident with private transport.

There had been no other cars involved in the accident.

The Police will investigate the reason for the taxi driver losing control of the vehicle causing it to roll.
