At the intersection of the R59 and DF Malan Drive in Sasolburg, serious accidents are prominent, so when ER24 paramedics arrived at the scene of the collision between a transporter bus and a car, they prepared themselves for the worst.
A Mercedes transporter and what appeared to be an Audi sedan, collided in a side impact accident at the intersection shortly before 4pm this afternoon. The cause of the accident is not known, but the damage to the Mercedes was extensive, and the Audi had landed in the field, quite a way off the road.
The driver of the Audi was found to be walking around the scene, and he had fortunately only suffered minor to moderate injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital by ambulance for further assessment and care.
The passenger travelling in the Mercedes had been flung from the vehicle during the impact, and sadly, he was found to have suffered extensive and severe injuries and paramedics initial assessments revealed no signs of life. There was nothing more that could be done for the man, and he was declared dead on scene.
The driver had suffered critical injuries and paramedics quickly removed him from the vehicle and initiated Advanced Life Support care. He would require extensive treatment, and was placed on external breathing equipment while the Medicopter was called in to the scene.
The man was airlifted in a critical condition to the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital.
The local authorities will investigate the cause of the fatal accident.
