[WITPOORTJIE, GP 1 June 2012, 15:30]

One man has sustained serious injuries this afternoon following a collision on the corners of Gerhard Maritz and Trezona avenue in Witpoortjie.

The events leading up to the collision is unclear at this stage, but a bakkie had collided into the passenger side of a vehicle in the intersection. The passenger vehicle had two occupants at the time of the collision.

ER24 paramedics who later arrived at the scene found that the passenger, a man believed to be aged in his 50’s, had sustained suspected head and chest injuries. The on-scene paramedics promptly dispatched the ER24 Discovery Medicopter to the scene.

The man then received treatment at the scene for suspected back, neck, chest and head injuries before being airlifted to the Charlotte Maxeke hospital for further treatment.

The driver of the passenger vehicle sustained minor injuries in the form of scrapes and bruises only. The man was treated and transported from the scene by another ambulance service. Local law enforcement officials attended the scene and will be investigating the incident further.
