Two die and 24 injured after two taxis collide in Durban

Two people have died and 24 others sustained various injuries after two taxi’s collided at the intersection of Essenwood and Bree street in Durban central this morning.

The exact cause of the collision is unclear, but ER24 paramedics arrived at the scene to find both minibus taxi’s with severe damage and both overturned onto their right side. It seems as if the one taxi had collided into the side of the other causing both vehicles to overturn on impact.

On-scene Emergency Medical Services found that two occupants involved in the collision had sustained various fatal injuries. Both individuals were later declared dead at the scene. A further 24 people from the vehicles involved managed to remove themselves from the taxi.

One female patient, believed to be aged in her 30’s, had sustained serious injuries in the form of suspected back and neck injuries as well as a severely broken left leg. The remaining 23 patients were fortunate to have sustained moderate injuries only ranging from suspected back and neck injuries to various scrapes and bruises.

All of the patients received on-scene treatment from various ambulance services before being transported to various medical facilities for further treatment. Local law enforcement officials attended the scene and will be investigating the incident further.
