A security guard was patrolling the property of a smallholding in Chartwell, when he walked down to the river to one of his check points. As he was walking, he explained to paramedics later, he felt a burning sensation in his left ankle and when he looked down he saw a snake slithering away. It is not certain what kind of snake it was, as it was not captured, but descriptions of the snake have led to the suspicion that the snake was a Puff Adder.
After walking the almost one kilometer back to the main house to inform the home owner what had happened, the paramedics called. Upon inspection of the site, they found two small puncture wounds just above the patient’s left ankle.
They provided symptomatic treatment to the patient and care of the injury site as per required in these types of emergencies. The patient was then loaded into the ambulance and was transported to Olivedale clinic where he would undergo further assessment and the appropriate further care.
