Netcare 911 paramedics and other services responded to an accident scene at the intersection of Old Grey Town Road and Ottos Bluff Road in Pietermaritzburg this morning.
Upon their arrival on scene they found that three motor vehicles had collided resulting in four people sustaining serious injuries.
After the injured were treated and stabilised on scene, they were transported to various hospitals in the area for further medical care.
Exact detail to the cause of the accident and preceding events will remain the subject of a police investigation.
