A Ford bakkie collided into the back of a Ford SUV on the R512 while travelling in the direction of Lanseria airport this morning, and leaving eight people with various injuries.

Paramedics and rescuers arrived at the scene of the collision to find that the five occupants who had been sitting on the back of the bakkie had been ejected and were found lying on the side of the road following the impact into the back of the other vehicle. All five men, on their way to work at a construction site this morning, suffered moderate to severe injuries and they were taken to hospital by ambulance along with the driver of the bakkie.

The front seat passenger had been critically injured and due to the nature of his injuries, a medical helicopter was called to the scene and the man was airlifted to the Charlotte Maxeke hospital for further medical care.

The woman who had been travelling alone in the SUV was complaining of severe back pain and Rescuers used the Jaws of Life to remove a section of the vehicle so that she could be safely removed. She was transported by ambulance to the Life Fourways hospital for care.

At this time the cause of the collision is unknown and will be under investigation by local authorities.
