Late night collision leaves driver entrapped in canal

Alpine and Umgeni

One person had a lucky escape after a serious collision at the intersection of Umgeni Road and Alpine Road in Durban late last night.

Rescue Care paramedics were shocked to find that three vehicles had collided in the junction before one vehicle lost control and rolled into a canal running parallel to Umgeni Road coming to rest on its roof. Rescue Care paramedics quickly made their way down to the vehicle. They found the driver of the vehicle to still be entrapped in the upside down wreckage. Rescue Services were called to assist and had to use the jaws of life as well as other hydraulic equipment to free the trapped driver. Once freed the injure male was brought up to Umgeni Road using specialized equipment. He was then transported by Rescue Care to a nearby hospital for further care that he required.

It is unclear what caused the collision however SAPS were in attendance and will be investigating the incident.
