Four people were killed and four others critically injured in Edendale, Pietermaritzburg when two vehicles collided on on Saturday night.
ER24 paramedics arrived on Newport Road to find three people dead and five critically injured patients entrapped in the wreckage.
The trapped patients were freed from the vehicles using jaws-of-life equipment and immediately stabilised before they underwent advanced life support treatment.
These patients were thereafter transported to a nearby hospital for further treatment. Unfortunately one of them died on arrival at the hospital.
Witnesses on scene told paramedics that the head-on collision occurred after one of the vehicles apparently drifted into the road’s oncoming lane.
Local authorities were on scene for further investigations.
