Three people, including a child, were seriously injured when their bakkie overturned on the N1/N12 split in Diepkloof, south of Johannesburg last night.

Shortly after 22:00 paramedics arrived on the scene and found all of the occupants outside of the vehicle. It is understood from bystanders that they pulled the occupants from the vehicle shortly after the incident occurred. A 22-year-old woman, believed to be the mother, sustained serious head injuries and had to be stabilised on the scene before she could be taken through to hospital. A child, believed to be 1 year old, also sustained serious head injuries. Both were later rushed off to Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital for further medical care.

The driver, believed to be the uncle, sustained only moderate injuries and was treated for a shoulder fracture on the scene before being taken through to hospital.

According to bystanders on the scene, it appeared as if the bakkie entered the intersection too fast and lost control, causing it to collide with the barriers and the embankment.

The incident was handed over to the Johannesburg Metro Police that attended the scene.
