A man is in a critical condition after a manhole cover fell on his head and back at the Currie and Pasteur Road intersection, Bloemfontein this afternoon. ER24 paramedics, along with other services, arrived to find a man suspended in a manhole on the side of the road.
Paramedics immediately began their rescue of the trapped patient. Once freed, paramedics found no signs of life on the patient and immediately begun CPR and defribulation.
After some time, the mans signs of life returned. Advanced life support was performed on the patient before he was transported to a nearby hospital for further medical treatment. Witnesses stated that the man had apparently been living in the manhole. He had apparently tried to climb up when the manhole cover fell on top of him.
Local authorities were on scene to begin their investigations.
