Netcare 911 paramedics and other services responded to an accident on the N1 by Hammanskraal yesterday afternoon.
Upon their arrival on scene they found a man in a critical condition after a vehicle rear-ended a heavy goods vehicle.
Services had to make use of the Jaws of Life to extricate the man from the vehicle.
The Netcare1 helicopter was activated to airlift the critically injured man to hospital for the urgent medical care required.
Exact detail surrounding the accident will remain the subject of a police investigation.
