Earlier today, around 11h30, paramedics from KZN Emergency Medical Services, responded to a house fire in the Sydenham area of Durban.
When the paramedics, arrived on scene in Williamson road, they found that the fire in a large house had already been extinguished by the Durban fire department. Six patients required emergency care. The most serious patient, was a man of about 53 years old, who when the paramedics started treating was unconscious. The paramedics treated the man with oxygen and administered the required medical care to the man, who regained consciousness and his condition stabilized.
Another five patients, who were believed to be neighbors who had reportedly entered the burning house to rescue the man, were treated by the paramedics for the effects of the smoke from the fire. These five patients who were in a stable condition, decided not to be transported to hospital by ambulance after being assessed and receiving basic medical treatment by the medics..
The man who had been unconscious and who was stabilized by the paramedics was transported to a private hospital in Durban for continued care.
The cause of the fire is being investigated by the local authorities.
