Nearly 100 Durban informal dwellings destroyed by fire

Earlier this morning Emergency Services in the Durban area responded to a fire in the informal settlement, on Johannas Road in the Sea Cow Lake area of Durban.

The Durban fire department fought the large blaze, which was estimated to have affected 80-100 informal dwellings, for several hours. Paramedics from KZN Emergency Medical Services and officers from the South African Police Service were also standing by on the scene to assist.

The residents were in a frenzy to try to save their belongings and were carting items ranging from bed mattresses to clothing out of their dwellings to safety on the nearby road.

Fire fighters managed to extinguish the blaze and continued to water down smouldering hot spots.

Fortunately there were no injuries reported during the blaze or in its aftermath.

The circumstances around the start of the blaze are not known and will be investigated by officials.
