Mthatha flying squad makes arrest and recovers illegal firearms on the N2

Mthatha flying squad members arrested three men, aged between 22 and 29, for possession of an unlicensed R4 rifle with 32 rounds of ammunition, on the N2 road near Walter Sisulu University, yesterday, 16 March 2015 at about 08:00.

It is alleged that the police were following up on information they received about unlawful possession of a firearm, when they found an R4 rifle hidden under the back seat of a silver grey Mazda 2. When circulating the firearm, it was found out that it was not reported stolen and that it belongs to Nqabeni Khalipha from Ikwezi township, Mthatha.

The motor vehicle which belonged to one of the suspects’ brother was also confiscated. The firearm will be sent for ballistics to establish whether it cannot be linked to other criminal activities.

The suspects appeared before Mthatha Magistrate Court today facing charges of possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition. They were granted R800.00 bail each and the case has been remanded for 23 June 2015. The owner of the firearm will be charged on the later stage for negligence.
