Three die in KZN on N3 northbound under the Hammarsdale bridge

Three people, believed to be family members, who were travelling in a car on the N3 northbound under the Hammarsdale bridge, in KwaZulu-Natal, were killed early this morning.

It is believed the family was travelling southbound towards Pietermaritzburg. A truck travelling in the opposite direction apparently lost control and overturned.

The load on the truck was ejected and it impacted with the car.

When ER24 paramedics and other services arrived on scene they found the truck on its roof. It was engulfed in flames. Fire and Rescue Services extinguished the fire.

On assessment of the car it was found that three passengers, all women, were trapped. Unfortunately there was nothing paramedics could do for them. They were declared dead. Fire and Rescue Services extricated them from the vehicle.

A fourth passenger was found to be in a critical condition and the driver was found to have sustained moderate injuries. They were treated and transported to hospital for further medical care.

The exact cause of what led to the incident is unknown. Authorities were on scene for further investigations.
