Lightning claims one life, leaves scores injured

Last night paramedics from KZN Emergency Medical Services in the Ilembe district, of KZN, responded to a rondavel near Qavavu Primary school, in the Maphumulo area, after a dwelling had been stuck by lightning.

It is believed that 17 men had gathered in a thatched roof rondavel and that they were watching soccer on TV, when the lightning stuck near the rondavel. A 16 year old teenager, who had been sitting closet to the door, sadly passed away at the scene. Paramedics treated the 16 other men. Five of them were in a serious condition while the remaining men had sustained minor injuries and were most stunned and shell shocked.

The injured patients were treated at the scene before being transported to several hospitals in the area, for continued medical care.

As KZN EMS, we would like to send our condolences to the victim’s family and we wish the injured a speedy recovery.
