Suspected hijackers arrested at KwaDabeka

The Umhlali Task Team together with Umhlali detectives arrested three suspect on Friday, 19 November 2015 at KwaDabeka area. The suspects are believed to be involved in a number of business robberies at KwaDabeka, Verulam, Tongaat, Emanguzi and Umhlali areas targeting business shops. They were found in possession of two unlicensed pistols and ammunition. The arrested suspects aged between 20 and 25 will appear today in the Umhlali Magistrate’s Court facing hijacking and possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition. The recovered firearms will be sent for ballistic tests to establish if they were used in any other crimes in the province.

On 19 November 2015 at about 23:00, the victim was at Shakaskraal in his vehicle with his girlfriend when they were approached by the suspects. They were pointed with firearms and suspects drove away the vehicle while they were inside. Later they were dropped off and the suspects fled the scene with victim’s vehicle. A case of hijacking was opened at Umhlali police station and through investigation, three suspects were arrested at KwaDabeka area.

KwaZulu-Natal provincial commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni praised the members for the arrest of three suspects. “We highly appreciate the relationship we had with the members of the community for giving us information about the whereabouts of the suspects. The arrested suspects will be profiled and see if they are not wanted for other crimes in the province, she said.
