This morning at 07h59 Netcare 911 paramedics responded to a truck that overturned on the N3 near the Marian Hill toll plaza. Reports from the scene indicate that a truck with a load of scrap metal was traveling south bound when it was involved in a collision with two other vehicles before he crashed through the barriers. The vehicle struck the traffic camera and then overturned down an embankment; its twisted remains came to rest in the North Bound lanes.
Paramedics arrived and found the highway obstructed with the crumpled remains of the truck and the load of scrap metal that was spread over two lanes. The driver of the truck was heavily entrapped and in a critical condition, the passenger from the truck was ejected and tragically died due to the extensive injuries that he sustained. A female driver from one of the vehicle sustained moderate injuries.
The Netcare rescue officer used the Jaws of Life to extricate the driver and worked fervently for about 45 minutes before they were able to remove him from the twisted metal. The injured were stabilised at the scene before they were transported to a nearby hospitals for the care that they required.
