A bizarre house fire left an elderly man dead and an elderly woman with extensive burns to her lower legs in Sury Aville, Newcastle.
At approximately 14.40pm this afternoon, paramedics from ER24 and the local fire department arrived on the scene after they were dispatched to a house fire. Upon their arrival they found no indication of a house fire, however bystanders on the scene quickly escorted them into the house.
Upon assessment it was evident that a fire took place inside the house, however it appeared as if it was extinguished some time ago. An elderly man was found lying on the kitchen floor. He had no signs of life and appeared to have been dead for some time. Paramedics found an elderly woman in the bedroom with extensive burns to her legs. She was in shock and severe pain.
It is understood from the woman that the fire apparently took place sometime on Saturday. The couple and damages were only discovered this afternoon when friends came over and entered the house. They alerted emergency services.
The local authorities attended the scene and will conduct an investigation into the cause as well as the exact circumstances surround the fire and when it started.
