Baby receives treatment after being abandoned in the rain, Marianhill

Paramedics have examined and provided supportive care for a baby who was abandoned in Marianhill last night.

Officers from the South African Police Service had been called to a sports field on Intake road near Motala store in the Marianhill area, west of  Durban, last night. The officers found a baby girl, estimated to be about 12-18 months old, who had been wrapped in a blanket and left in the rain. The police officers took the baby to the police station, where they were met by paramedics from the Department of Health’s Emergency Medical Services.

When paramedics examined the baby, who had been wrapped in new warm blankets by the police officers, they found that she was in a stable condition and she only required supportive care. She was transported to the hospital for a more detailed examination by a paediatrician.

The circumstances surrounding the babies’ abandonment are being investigated by the Police.
