A man has been arrested for theft in the Avoca area, north of Durban

A man has been arrested thanks to the vigilance of local neighbours in the Avoca area, north of Durban.

At approximately 04:30 on Tuesday morning, Marshall Security was alerted through a neighbourhood WhatsApp group, to a suspicious man walking on Avoca Road carrying a battery. Armed reaction officers were immediately dispatched and the man was intercepted on Effingham Road.

When reaction officers questioned the man, he admitted to having stolen the battery from an electric gate motor from premises in the Avoca area. The man was placed under arrest and handed over to the South African Police Services for further investigation and processing.

It is believed that the suspect is linked to a spate of gate motor and battery thefts in the greater north Durban area of late.
