Free State Health Department celebrates International Nurses Day

The Premier of the Free State, Honourable Sisi Ntombela accompanied by the MEC for Health, Honourable Montsheng Tsiu will host the Provincial Celebrations of International Nurses Day 2018. This is a day set aside by the World Health Organisation to mark the contributions nurses make to society and also to celebrate the anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth which is on the 12 May.

The International Council of Nurses established the day in 1974 to be celebrated every year to highlight the importance of nurses’ role in providing the best healthcare services. International Council of Nurses celebrates the nurses’ day by preparing and handing out a Nurses Day Kit (having educational and public information materials to be used by the nurses among public) every year worldwide. Nurses are encouraged on this day to comprehensively use this kit throughout the year through their individual and group activities.

Nursing is the largest health care profession in the world and are key for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. Nurses are well trained and educated for maintaining the health and wellness of the patients through all the aspects like the psychosocially, socially and their ability to cope with the ever changing economic landscape. The International Council of Nurses celebrates this event aimed at increasing the public awareness about the nursing and nurses contribution towards the healthcare innovation. Nurses are the first point of contact for health services. This event will be held under the following arrangements:

Venue : Doxa Deo Church, Bloemfontein, near KFC and Game in Fichardt Park

This year the event will be commemorated under the theme “Nurses: A voice to lead – Health is a human right.”
