Stern warning issued against taxi industry related killings in KZN

Transport, Community Safety and Liaison MEC Mxolisi Kaunda has strongly condemned the taxi industry killings in the province, following the killing of yet another taxi operator, Bonga Makhanya who was the Chairperson of Umbumbulu Taxi Association.

During a meeting with the taxi associations, Kaunda issued a stern warning against taxi violence in the area, saying that he would not hesitate to shut down operations if another taxi industry related killing occurred.

“About 84 people have been killed in Umbumbulu since the beginning of this year. Although we cannot be certain if these killings were all industry related, we suspect that most of them are a result of the taxi violence that has been taking place in this area. We will tighten law enforcement and will leave no stone unturned in ensuring that perpetrators are brought to book. We will raid all households to confiscate all illegal firearms which are used in these attacks, as well as check roadworthiness of private vehicles and taxis, through our Operation Shanela,” Kaunda concluded.
