A 39-year-old man was killed and his 45-year-old colleague was shot in the arm on Vincent Dickinson Road in Canelands – Verulam a short while ago (Saturday).
At approximately 19:50 a Toyota Hiace taxi drove to Reaction Unit South Africa’s Headquarters on Russom Street in Verulam. One of the occupants of the vehicle requested medical assistance for two of his colleagues who had been shot in an alleged hit.
Medics assessed a 39-year-old man who was seated in the driver’s seat at the time of the shooting. He was found to have sustained two gunshot wounds to his body. He showed no signs of life and was declared dead on arrival. The front passenger was treated for a single gunshot wound to his arm before he was transported to hospital in a stable condition.
It is alleged that all three occupants of the vehicle are taxi drivers. They were on their way home to Cottonlands near Verulam when they stopped in Canelands to talk to a friend. An unknown male walked up to their vehicle, drew a firearm and opened fire on the driver and front passenger before he fled. The passenger seated at the back was not injured. He pushed the critically injured driver aside and drove the vehicle to RUSA Headquarters.
The motive for the shooting is believed to be related to taxi violence however this is subject to Police investigation.
