Reportedly Drunk Driver Arrested After Fleeing Crash Scene: Redcliffle – KZN

A drunk driver was arrested by members of Reaction Unit South Africa after he ran over a 62 year old pedestrian on Kalias Road in Redcliffe – Verulam this afternoon.

The accident was captured on CCTV and showed a Nissan 1400 bakkie without registration plates fleeing the scene after the driver ran over the elderly pedestrian. The information was circulated to all Reaction Officers who began searching for the vehicle while Medics stabilised the injured pedestrian on scene.

Response vehicles were positioned at the entrances of roads leading into and out of the area. Director of RUSA Vinod Balram spotted a bakkie matching the description of the sought after vehicle exiting Everest Heights. The vehicle was however being driven by a female.

Balram followed the bakkie into Redcliffe and noticed the vehicle swaying excessively. A male passenger was also seen lying against the driver. The information was circulated to RUSA Officers and the bakkie was stopped.

The female explained that she was a nurse at a doctors surgery in Verulam. Her intoxicated husband had arrived at her place of employment and when she noticed that he was drunk she decided to drive home.

Her husband admitted to running over the pedestrian. The damages on the bakkie were consistent with the accident. RUSA Officers placed the intoxicated man under arrest and handed him over to the Verulam SAPS.

The suspect was previously arrested by Reaction Officers after he fired shots at his family during a domestic dispute. He firearm was seized by Police following the shooting.

He was also under under the influence at the time of the shooting.
