The second day of the first National Safer City Summit takes place at the University of South Africa (UNISA) today.

Creation of safer cities and safer streets at National, Continental and International is subject for speculation for many years, as it cuts across all three crime prevention dimensions namely: Community, Situational and Developmental crime prevention.

In line with creation of safer cities, the South African Police Service, in collaboration with other law enforcement agencies has embarked on the development of a Safer City Model which intends to focus on making South African Cities safe for all inhabitants.

As part of bench-marking, a task team was established on 12 November 2018 consisting of the SAPS, the Ekhuruleni Metropolitan Police Department, Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department and Tshwane Metropolitan Police Department in order to generate, analyse and compare different plans and strategies. The task team is also established to plan for a Safer Summit and draft a Safer City Model.
