Robbery suspect impersonates mourner in Tongaat

A female was robbed of her phone by a man who claimed that he was attending a funeral with her mum on Daisy Place in Buffelsdale – Tongaat today (Thursday).

At approximately 13:01 the victim contacted Reaction Unit, South Africa, requesting assistance in tracking down the suspect. Upon arrival, she explained that her mum was attending a funeral near their home.

An Indian male dressed in blue jeans & an orange shirt arrived at her residence and claimed that he was also attending the same funeral. He informed the female that her mum had sent him to ask for a gas stove which was to be used at the funeral.

After she declined to hand it over he walked towards the residence where the funeral was being held and returned a short while later. He then asked to use the victim’s cellphone to make an urgent call. She dialled the number which was provided by him on her Huawei P20 lite and handed him the phone. The suspect began speaking to someone and walked away from the home with the phone. When the victim looked for the man he could not be located.

Reaction Officers conducted an extensive search for the suspect however he managed to evade arrest.
