Fire at Theron High School in Britstown

We can confirm that 9 classrooms, 4 restrooms , the kitchen and 7 storage rooms have been destroyed. At this stage the cause of the fire is still unknown and we are encouraging community members with any information to provide it to SAPS. We are also aware that this school community intended a planned shutdown in the Britstown today.

The Department committed to appoint a contractor by the 15th of September to demolish the Hostel building which burned down in 2016. An inspector is also scheduled to visit the school during the course of the week to assess the infrastructural needs of the school.

Due to the emotional well-being of the 58 Grade 12 learners, the Mathematics and Mathematical Literacy Paper that was scheduled to be written today were postponed. The District office is busy developing a contingency plan which will be informed by the extend of the damage.

We have seen trends, specifically in the Pixley Ka Seme District, where a number of schools burned down in the past year 5 years. In this District, the JJ Booysen Primary School, Strydenburg Combined School, Sonskyn Primary School, Victoria West Combined School Hostel as well as Theron High School Hostel burned down.

We are appealing to all school communities to take ownership of all schools as it represents a beacon of hope in our society. Collectively, we must guard and protect our institutions against any form of vandalism, theft and arson.

Officials from the Department will meet with the School Management, School Governing Body and parents of Theron High school this afternoon.

The MEC for Education, Mr. Mac Jack will be visiting the school tomorrow.
