SAPS offer advice for Safety on Trains

Railway safety is crucial for the protection of life. Be a safe commuter and always remember that your actions can cost other commuters their lives.

Your Passport to Train Safety provides guidelines in order to develop a culture of railway safety. Read more about what acts constitute an offense, and how you can ensure your personal safety while traveling by train.

As a commuter you may not:

          • Climb off or get onto a moving train
          • Open train doors while a train is in motion
          • Hang outside of the train while the train is in motion
          • Sit or stand between carriages while the train is in motion

        Personal safety on trains:

            • Be vigilant when traveling alone or after dark;
            • Whenever possible, travel in groups and arrange to be met at the station;
            • Avoid openly displaying of valuables such as jewellery and cellphones, guard your personal belongings;
            • Avoid traveling with valuables or large sums of cash;
            • Never leave your personal belongings with strangers;
            • No firearm or dangerous weapon may be taken through access control gates or on board a train;
            • Be observant so that if you witness an incident of any kind, you can supply SAPS officials with as much information as possible;
            • Develop a culture of rail safety by teaching your family safe habits such as crossing railway lines at authorised subways, pedestrian bridges or level crossings.
