Two people were killed and another left critically injured yesterday afternoon following a head-on collision between a bakkie and a light motor vehicle on the R54 between Potchefstroom and Vereeniging.
ER24 paramedics arrived on the scene shortly after 16h30 to find the two vehicles in the middle of the road.
On closer inspection, medics found a young man and woman lying trapped inside the light motor vehicle. Assessments showed that both patients had sustained numerous injuries and showed no signs of life. Nothing could be done for them and they were declared dead.
In the bakkie, medics found a 59-year-old man lying trapped inside, also in a critical condition.
Fochville Fire Services had to use specialised rescue equipment to free the man from the vehicle.
Once freed, medics treated the man and provided him with advanced life support interventions. Once treated, the man was transported to Potchefstroom Provincial Hospital for further care.
Local authorities were on the scene for further investigations.
