Two abalone poachers arrested in Bellville.

On 23 January 2020, vigilant members of Bellville CPU acted on information about illegal abalone in a house in Kommesaris Street Welgemoed in Bellville. The members conducted a further investigation and spotted suspects in the area who fled upon police arrival. A high speed chase led to the arrests of suspects close to N1 in Jip De Jager.

A further search was conducted in the vehicle which resulted in the seizure of four boxes of dry abalone. The members drove back to the house at the aforementioned address, where a total of 1038 units of illegal abalone estimated to be worth R81 1498-00 including the equipment that has been used to dry the abalone were confiscated.

Two suspects were arrested and are expected to make a court appearance soon in the Bellville Magistrate Court for illegal possession of abalone.

In an unrelated occurrence, the members of the Western Cape K9 Unit conducted crime prevention patrols in New Eisleben Road and they were informed about a white VW Polo vehicle that was hijacked in Joe Slovo, Milnerton. The vehicle was spotted in the opposite direction towards New Eisleben Road. The driver accelerated immediately when he saw the police vehicle to evade arrest. He drove direct into a cul de sac road in Better Life where after two suspects jumped out of the moving vehicle. One suspect was apprehended. A search was conducted in the vehicle and a Z88 pistol, one magazine and 9mm rounds of ammunition were seized.

The suspect aged 25 is expected to make a court appearance soon for possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition and presumed stolen property. Police urge anyone with information that can assist to apprehend a second suspect who is still at large to kindly contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
