Police nabbed five alleged illegal miners

POLOKWANE – The South African Police Service Organised Crime Unit in Limpopo, last night, on 23 March 2020, arrested five suspects during a high-density operation targeting the identified areas in and around the Burgersfort area where illegal mining activities are still prevalent.

During this operation, Police recovered a Toyota Hilux bakkie and various assorted tools.

Members of this Unit, followed up on a tip-off from members of the community about the suspects who were mining chrome illegally at one of the mines in the Mecklenburg policing area and reacted swiftly. Five suspects aged between 38 and 58, were arrested after they were found in possession of chrome that was found to be loaded into the vehicle.

The arrested suspects are expected to appear before the Mecklenburg Magistrate’s Court tomorrow, Wednesday, 25 March 2020, facing charges of illegal mining and possession of suspected stolen chrome.

The Police investigations are still continuing.
