Victim fights off robbers in Verulam

A 34-year-old man fought off three robbery suspects who were attempting to stab him during a robbery on Moss Street in Verulam.

A Reaction Officer was on patrol in the Verulam CBD at approximately 10:16 when he noticed the victim attempting to fight off the suspects. The Officer called for backup and pursued the suspects onto the R102 and into the Tongaat taxi rank. RUSA members conducted an extensive search however the robbers managed to evade arrest.

The victim explained that he was returning to his residence in Everest Heights shortly after purchasing some household items from the CBD when the three men suddenly surrounded him. They drew large knives and attempted to rob him. The victim used a packet containing groceries to block their attempts to stab him. The suspects fled empty-handed when they noticed the approaching RUSA Response Vehicle.

Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) has in recent weeks attended to several calls where pedestrians were robbed by three to five men armed with knives. The suspects in several incidents have stabbed the victims. In most cases, the victims were stabbed even though they did not resist.
The victim in today’s incident was not injured.
