Police arrest pair for possession of suspected stolen goods

POTCHEFSTROOM – Two male suspects aged 35 and 38 are expected to appear in the Molopo Magistrates’ Court in Mmabatho on Monday, 31 August 2020 for possession of suspected stolen goods.

The pair was arrested in the early hours of Thursday morning, 27 August 2020, in Makgobistad village, outside Mahikeng subsequent to a break-in at Mmoledi Secondary School.

According to information received, the police attended a burglary complaint at the school at about 02:45. A preliminary crime scene investigation showed that a motor vehicle was used to transport the stolen goods. Thus, police followed the tracks until Bray road. Consequently, a vehicle was spotted on the road traveling in the direction of Mahikeng. The police drove nearer to the vehicle in an attempt to stop it, but the driver accelerated.

Following a car chase, the suspects’ vehicle; a white Volkswagen Polo, was ultimately stopped. Resultant to the search, items that were positively linked to the break-in at the school were found. The items included 12 laptops, 155 tablets, and 12 smart pads worth R320 000.00.

Furthermore, police found and seized housebreaking implements. An investigation into the matter continues.

The Provincial Commissioner of North West, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena commended the members for their swift reaction, dedication and vigilance which led to the success. He urged the public to work together with the police to root out those who disrupt proper and effective learning by breaking at schools to steal valuable items including those that are used for learning as seen in this case.
