Provincial Commissioner welcomes the arrest of a lawyer for allegedly attempting to smuggle drugs

The Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba has welcomed the arrest of a 31-year-old lawyer for allegedly attempting to smuggle drugs and a cellphone into police on Tuesday morning at Mahwelereng Police Station outside Mokopane.

Piet Motshitshi Kekana, a lawyer attached to one of the local Law Firms in the area, allegedly arrived at the police station at about 11h30, wanting to consult one of the inmates who was due to appear in court.

A police officer working in the cells became suspicious of the bag the lawyer was carrying and called her male colleague to come and search it. This watchful policewoman apparently noticed every movement that the suspect was making and when her colleague arrived and conducted the search, a cellphone, dagga and sachets of nyaope were found in his possession, packaged in a plastic bag.

The suspect was later on Tuesday afternoon taken to Mokerong magistrate court where he appeared on a charge of possession of drugs. He was released on warning and his case was postponed to 27 November 2020 for further police investigations.

“The vigilance and alertness of the policewoman on duty at the time the suspect attempted to smuggle drugs into our police cells is commendable and must be sustained at all detention facilities,” concluded General Ledwaba.
