Gauteng police detectives round up more than one thousand suspects that have been on the run after committing various crimes

GAUTENG – As part of Operation O Kae Molao, Gauteng police detectives went out in full force to trace suspects that have been on the run after committing various crimes in the province. One thousand and fifty-five (1055) of these suspects were found and put behind bars. One hundred and sixty-nine (169) of these suspects were arrested for cases related to Gender-Based Violence, where women and children are victims of rape, sexual assault and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Other suspects were arrested for murder, attempted murder, armed robbery, house robbery, business robbery and car hijacking among other crimes.

Provincial Commissioner of the police in Gauteng, Lieutenant General Elias Mawela, Gauteng MEC for Community Safety Ms Faith Mazibuko and other high ranking officers from SAPS and other law enforcement agencies, this morning, took over from where the detectives have left and embarked on a roadblock as well as stop and search operations in Diepsloot. Police arrested four (4) suspects after they were found with four (4) unlicensed firearms with ammunition at different places around Diepsloot while two suspects were arrested for operating illegal liquor outlets.

The SAPS District Commissioners also led parallel operations in their respective districts as part of Operation O Kae Molao.

In West Rand, members of SAPS and other law enforcement agencies raided a panel beating apartment at Chamdor where some of the cars were suspected to be stolen. The team recovered seven (7) cars of which others tested positive as stolen and hijacked while others were tampered with. The owner of the property was arrested and charged with possession of stolen and hijacked vehicles. During the operation seven (7) undocumented persons were detained.

Other suspects were arrested for serious and violent crimes that include murder, robbery, fraud, possession of drugs and possession of an unlicensed firearm.

In Tshwane, the District Commissioner led various law enforcement agencies where roadblocks were conducted. During the operation, two suspects were arrested for possession of unlicensed firearm, ammunition and for possession of the suspected stolen vehicle. These suspects might also be linked to other serious and violent crimes pending the investigation. Other suspects were arrested for crimes ranging from possession of ammunition, possession of drugs, drinking in public, contravention of Second Hand Goods Act and illegal immigrants. Traffic fines to the value of R82 250.00 were issued.

In Ekurhuleni, police focused more on illegal liquor outlets and illegal substances that are regarded as generators of serious and violent crimes. Twelve (12) suspects were arrested for possession of and dealing in drugs while eleven (11) illegal liquor outlets were shut down and the owners issued with fines to the value of R22 500-00. Liquor amounting to 23756 millilitres were confiscated. Traffic fines to the value of R30 200-00 were also issued.

Second-hand dealerships were raided and owners were issued with fines amounting to R6 000-00 for non-compliance. Other suspects were arrested for theft, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, domestic violence and possession of the suspected stolen vehicle.

In Sedibeng, police were joined by other law enforcement agencies where they arrested suspects for selling illegal cigarettes, incitement as well as possession of drugs and dagga. Two suspects were arrested for selling liquor without a licence and the outlets were subsequently shut down.

Counterfeit goods to the value of R42 million were seized by the police in Johannesburg Central Business District. Three suspects were arrested while two minibuses loaded with the goods were confiscated.

Lieutenant General Mawela commended all the law enforcement agencies who remain committed to participating in Operation O Kae Molao, for the high level of team spirit and urged them to sustain the momentum in the strife to reduce serious and violent crime in the Province.
